The South Point Pointers were just “two” much.
The Pointers used two errors and a two-run two-base hit to edge the Ironton Fighting Tigers 6-5 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Two seventh inning errors allowed the Pointers to score the winning run after Drew Smith hit a two-run double that tied the game in the sixth inning.
Brody Blackwell got the complete game win as he allowed three earned runs, struck out six and walked three.
Ryan Ashley went the distance for Ironton in taking the loss. He fanned two walked three.
“Brody Blackwell pitched well. He stepped up and really threw the ball well in the seventh to secure the victory,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“Offensively, we were able to execute some plays to manufacture a few runs. It was a good bounce back win for us coming off a loss Friday.”
South Point went up 2-0 in the first inning.
Smith was hit by a pitch, Drake McClure singled and Ben Walls put down a sacrifice bunt to score Smith. Brycen McCann and Nakian Dawson singled to score the second run.
Ironton tied the game in the game in the second with one out.
Ashley reached on an error, moved up on a ground out, Beau Brownstead singled and went to second on the throw and Jacob Sloan had a two-run single.
The score remained tied until the fifth when the Pointers got a run.
Smith and McClure singled, Smith stole third and came home when McClure was thrown out trying to steal second.
But Ironton took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Sloan walked and stole second. Brycen Thomas singled and Sloan scored on an outfield error.
Thomas went to second on the error, stole third and scored on Cameron Deere’s base hit.
South Point tied the game in the top of the sixth.
Nakian Dawson walked and went to third on Zach Cline’s hit. Cline moved up on a fielder’s choice and Smith got his clutch two-out, two-run double.
The Pointers got the winning run in the top of the seventh.
Blackwell reached on a dropped fly ball and Walls was safe on an infield error to put runners on the corners. McCann then singled home Blackwell.
Ashley then retired the side but Ironton couldn’t generate anything in the bottom of the inning.
Smith finished 2-3 while McCann and McClure were 2-4.
Kyle Howell was 2-4 as Ironton had seven hits.
