Bad inning cripples Flyers in loss

BIDWELL — There’s that one bad inning again.
The St. Joseph Flyers suffered one bad inning that led to a 9-7 against the River Valley Raiders on Tuesday.
St. Joseph (11-5) matched the Raiders with 11 hits each and both teams had four errors, but the Flyers walked six players while Raiders’ pitcher Andrew Mershon did not issue a walk.
Five different players had two hits for the Flyers. Isaac Whaley was 2-3 with a double, Michael Mahlmeister 2-3, Chase Wilds 2-4 with two runs batted in, and Matt Sheridan and Jimmy Mahlmeister were 2-3.
The Flyers struck first with two runs in the first inning.
Sheridan, Whaley and Wilds all singled for a run and Ryan Payne hit a sacrifice fly.
But the Raiders scored six runs in the third to take the lead.
Chase Caldwell and Dalton Mershon singled and Blaine Cline had a two-run double. Alex Euton singled and Chase Kemper walked to load the bases.
Alex Mershon reached on an error as a run scored and Joel Horner was safe on an error as two runs scored. Euton then scored on a passed ball to cap the rally.
The Flyers cut the deficit to 6-4 in the top of the fourth.
Jimmy Mahlmeister and Michael Mahlmeister both singled and scored when Izsak Unger was safe on an error.
But the Raiders got a run back in the bottom of the inning.
Caldwell singled, Dalton Mershon walked and Cline reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Alex Mershon then drew a two-out walk to force in the run.
St. Joseph came back to score a run in the top of the fifth when Sheridan singled, Whaley walked and Wilds hit into a double play with Sheridan scoring.
The Raiders came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 9-6.
Wyatt Halfhill and Caldwell singled and Dalton Mershon walked to load the bases. Halfhill was out trying to steal home. Cline walked to re-load the bases and Caldwell scored on a wild pitch.
Euton then singled in the second run.
The Flyers mounted a rally in the seventh that fell short.
Jimmy Mahlmeister singled and went to second on an outfield error, then took third on a ground out. Jacob Salisbury delivered a pinch-hit RBI single but the next three batters were retired to end the game.
