AID — The starters did what they were supposed to do, so a couple of backups decided to do their part as well.
The St. Joseph Flyers were missing two starters, but their replacements proved more than capable and Isaac Whaley threw a two-hitter in a 10-0 six-inning win over the Symmes Valley Vikings on Monday.
“Isaac threw the ball well and we hit the ball up and down the lineup,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“We had a couple of starters out today, but Ethan Clark and Elijah Rowe did a nice job in the field and at the plate for us.”
Whaley struck out nine and walked one for the win. He also went 2-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Jackson Rowe was 3-4 with a double and an RBI, Matt Sheridan was 3-4 and Ryan Payne 2-3 with a double and three RBI.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Jackson Rowe and Matt Sheridan singled with Rowe moving up on a wild pitch. Isaac Whaley grounded out as the run scored.
Payne followed with an RBI single.
St. Joseph (11-4) added five run in the second to lead 7-0.
Clark singled, Elijah Rowe doubled and Jackson Rowe followed with an RBI double. Elijah Rowe scored on a balk.
Jackson Rowe stole third and scored on an error. Whaley and Payne hit doubles for a run and Jimmy Mahlmeister singled in the final run.
Two more runs scored in the fourth.
With one out, Sheridan singled and scored on Whaley’s second double. Whaley stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
The final run scored in the sixth when Elijah Rowe walked, Jackson Rowe and Sheridan singled and Payne walked to force home run pinch-runner Andrew White.
Levi Niece and Tanner McComas each went 1-2 for the Vikings.
