Injuries are part of the game.
A bad part.
The St. Joseph Lady Flyers lost starting pitcher Alex Holtzapfel to an injury in the second inning and lost 6-1 to the South Gallia Lady Rebels on Wednesday.
South Gallia used a walked and two hit batsmen to load the bases starting the second inning. That’s when the problems really began for the Lady Flyers.
Holtzapfel attempted to field a popup and was injured, forcing her to lead the game and shortstop Kelsey Malone to take over.
Another walk and a single gave the Lady Rebels a 2-0 lead.
St. Joseph cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning when Kaitlyn Sheridan walked and came all the way around to score on a double by Kelsey Malone.
South Gallia answered with three runs in the fourth with the aid of an error.
With two outs, the Lady Rebels used a single, three walks and an error to take a 5-1 lead.
The final run scored with two outs in the fifth on a walk and a dropped fly ball.
St. Joseph had four hits with Faith Mahlmeister going 1-1, Sheridan 1-2, Paige Preston 1-3 and Malone 1-4 with a double.
