PROCTORVILLE — Hits might have been at a premium, but the Fairland Dragons figured out how to score runs anyway.
Fairland had just five hits but combined them with 14 walks and two errors to beat the St. Joseph Flyers 12-1 in five innings on Thursday.
“We threw a bunch of our young kids, but that’s not an excuse. Fairland is a pretty good team,” Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant said.
And speaking of hits being at a premium, Dacoda Chapman allowed only a single to Matt Sheridan as he pitched a one-hitter to get the win. Chapman struck out 10 and walked six.
Tucker Adkins was 2-3 with a double and three runs batted in for the Dragons (15-4).
Fairland got a run in the first on walks to Gavin Hunt and Chapman and an error.
The Dragons then scored six runs in the second inning to lead 7-0.
Garrett Looney doubled and Bryan Defoe and Brennan West walked to load the bases.
Hunt grounded out to score a run and Looney scored on a balk. Adkins singled and Alex Rogers had an RBI double. Kyle Rankin walked and Reilly Sowards had a two-run triple.
The Flyers (12-6) got their only run in the fourth when Chase Wilds walked, stole second, took third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jimmy Mahlmeister.
Fairland got five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Rankin, Sowards and Looney all walked to load the bases. Two outs later, Hunt and Chapman walked to force in runs and Tucker Adkins had a three-run double.
