Lady Fighting Tigers clinch OVC softball title
PORTSMOUTH — That’s a wrap.
The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers wrapped up the Ohio Valley Conference softball championship a little early as they beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 11-0 in five innings on Monday.
Ironton is now 20-1 on the season and 12-0 in the league with two conference games still to play.
The Lady Tigers wrapped up the title in championship fashion as Keegan Moore fired a one-hitter. She struck out 12 of the 15 outs and did not walk a batter.
The only baserunner she allowed was a single by Faith Phillips leading off the second inning.
Haylee Stevens led a 10-hit Ironton offense by going 3-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Taiya Hamlet was 2-2 with a double while Kylee Richendollar was 1-2 with a double and three RBI.
Ironton got the only run it needed in the first inning when Mary Beth Burton reached on an error and Hamlet doubled.
The lead went to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Richendollar after Stevens singled and went to third on a two-base outfield error.
The Lady Tigers opened the game up with five runs in the third.
Burton, Hamlet and Demi Sands all singled for a run. An error scored a run and Moore singled in a run. Stevens doubled for another run and Richendollar double home two more.
The Lady Tigers created the run rule with four runs in the fourth.
Peighton Rowe, Burton and Hamlet all reached on errors to load the bases as Rowe scored. Riley Schreck was safe on an error as Burton scored.
Stevens capped the rally with a two-run double.
