Lady Hornets’ rally comes up just short

GALLIPOLIS — So close.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets had a seventh inning rally fall just short as they lost 10-9 to the Gallipolis Blue Angles in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Coal Grove scored three runs in the top of the first inning when Addi Dillow singled, Kaleigh Murphy reached on an error and Rylee Harmon unloaded a three-run homer.
Gallipolis got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Alex Barnes singled, Bailey Young walked and Abby Hammons singled.
The Lady Hornets got the run back in the second on a single by Katie Deeds and walks to Dillow, Murphy and Harmon.
Gallipolis (8-10, 8-3) tied the game in the fourth.
Barnes and Young singled and Chasity Adams had a bunt single for a run. Two runs scored when Bailey Meadows and Hammons each grounded out.
The Lady Hornets went up 6-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Deeds singled and scored when Murphy was safe on an error. Murphy scored on a hit by Harmon.
But the Blue Angels scored three times in the bottom of the inning.
Aubry Unroe, Presley Reed and Young all drew walks. Unroe scored on a passed ball, Reed came in on a wild pitch and Hammons singled in the final run.
Dillow singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Lauren Crum’s base hit in the sixth to tie the game.
Gallipolis came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 10-7.
Barnes reached on an error and scored after bunt singles by Adams and Meadows. Hammons then doubled in a run and Malerie Stanley squeezed home the final run.
Coal Grove (11-11, 5-6) then tried to rally in the seventh.
Macy Malone singled went to second on an error. Amber Schwartz walked and Malone scored on a wild pitch. Schwartz went to third on the wild pitch and scored when Deeds reached on an error.
Dillow doubled to put runners at second and third but pitcher Hunter Copley got a comebacker to end the game.
Harmon was 2-3 with a home run and four runs batted in for Coal Grove. Dillow went 3- with a double and Deeds was 2-4.
Hammons was 3-4 with a double and four RBI for Gallipolis.
