PROCTORVILLE — The defense settled this outcome. Or rather, the lack of it.
Seven errors accounted for seven unearned runs as the Gallipolis Blue Angels edged the Fairland Lady Dragons 5-4 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.
Bailey Meadows got the win as she allowed only four hits, struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. All four runs were unearned.
Adrianna Hoffman was the losing pitcher and she was the victim of defensive mistakes. She gave up nine hits, struck out six, walked three and only two of the runs were earned.
Gallipolis went up 1-0 in the first inning on doubles by Abby Hammons and Meadows.
The Blue Angels extended the lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
With two outs, Kyla Miller was safe on an error, Alex Barnes singled and the runners moved up on a wild pitch. Chasity Adams was safe on an error as a run scored.
Hammons then singled home two more runs.
The winning run scored in the top of the fourth inning.
Barnes bunted for a hit, stole second and scored on Adams’ triple.
Fairland scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Emily Bowen and Hoffman singled. Olivia Combs bunted for a hit and a throwing error on the play scored both runners.
Hallie Lester reached on an error and Holli Leep was safe on an error as two more runs scored.
