Pointers pull away late for 6-2 win

SOUTH POINT — The Ironton Fighting Tigers and South Point Pointers decided to exchange gifts.
Ironton issued eight walks to help the Pointers score, and South Point had six errors to assist the Fighting Tigers scoring.
When the gift giving was finished, the Pointers came away with a 6-2 Ohio Valley Conference win on Wednesday.
“Brycen McCann pitched a great game allowing zero earned runs,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“Drew Smith had a big night. Three runs scored and five stolen bases. Ben Walls had two big hits.”
McCann went the distance for the win. He allowed just three hits, struck out one and walked four. Neither run was earned.
The Pointers went up 1-0 in the first inning when Drew Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on Brody Blackwell’s sacrifice fly.
Ironton (10-12) came right back to take a 2-1 lead in the second.
Collin Freeman singled and went to third on an error. Beau Brownstead was safe on an error to score Freeman.
Jacob Sloan reached on the third error in the inning sending Brownstead to third base where he scored on Kyle Howell’s ground out.
The Pointers tied the game in the third.
Smith was hit by a pitch, stole second, Ben Walls singled and Blackwell hit a sacrifice fly.
South Point regained the lead with two runs in the fifth.
Smith singled, Walls and Blackwell walked and Smith scored on a wild pitch. Brycen McCann singled to load the bases and Zach Cline walked to force in a run.
The lead went to 6-2 with two runs in the sixth.
Justin Collins walked and pinch-runner Brendon Dillon scored when Walls hit a one-out double. Drake McClure was hit by a pitch and McCann and Nakian Dawson walked to force in a run.
Walls was 2-3 as the Pointers had only four hits.
Duncan went 2-3 and Freeman 1-3 for Ironton.
