In a few weeks, Ironton will host the 151st annual Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade.

Lawrence County has a rich history of those who have served their nation, and it is fitting that we honor them.
As preparations for this year’s parade are starting to get under way, we learned of the passing of a particularly noteworthy individual, whose story can be found on today’s obituary page.

Georgene Day Weber, a former Ironton resident, died in North Carolina on Wednesday, at the age of 98.
Following her graduation from Ironton High School, Weber enrolled in the Portsmouth School of Nursing and received her diploma as a registered nurse.

After graduation, she then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served abroad as a nurse in the European Theatre during World War II.

As a result of her service, Weber received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque.

After the war and her discharge, Weber’s contributions continued, this time as a civilian at home in Lawrence County, where, for many years, she could be found working as a nurse at Lawrence County General Hospital, caring for patients in Ironton.

Mrs. Weber’s long life was one of putting others first.
