Day is important to many

We congratulate the officials of Lawrence County for allowing the National Day of Prayer to continue.

There was some concern that the event would have to relocate since it is normally held on the courthouse steps but this year, the stonework over the Fifth Street entrance was being renovated and that steps are closed off to the public.

When the Ironton Ministerial Association asked about the situation, they were told they could use the lawn by Park Avenue.

It turned out to be a wise move. Around 80 people attended and got to sit in the shade of the large trees, making it more pleasant for all involved.

The National Day of Prayer was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. The Ironton Ministerial Association has held an event at the courthouse since President Ronald Reagan amended the law in 1988 to make the first Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer.

We commend all those involved for continuing to have a day to pray for Lawrence County and all those that live and work here.
