On Saturday, The Tribune won six Associated Press awards for 2018, including three first places, two second places and a third place, in the Division 1 category of newspapers with a daily circulation of up to 7,999.

Creative director Kandi Thompson received first place for Best Illustration or Informational Graphic for “Making the Grade,” which judges called “ a solid entry that hits all of the marks very well. Going with a chart so readers can compare one district to another in a large and readable format is an excellent idea.”

She also got a first place for Best Full Page Design for “Top Stories of the Year.”

The judges loved the execution of this package and commented that “the top stories header ripped, the clear order of stories using numbered photos and complementary banners. This page makes sense and is easy to read. Good use of space overall. Excellent.”

Thompson got second place for Best Graphics Artist with the judges commenting that they love how clear and organized these pages are and added, “You use a definitive style with just a touch of flair. Nice!”

Community editor Heath Harrison and reporter Mark Shaffer won first place in the Best Enterprise Reporting category for “Opioid Crisis Series.”

Harrison also won third place for Best Editorial Writer.

Former Tribune photographer Jessica St. James won second place for best news photo for “Everyday Heroes,” which judges gave a kudos “for finding that moment that says it all.”
