GETAWAY — Students at Collins Career Technical Center got a hands-on opportunity to see how hazardous materials are handled.
Charlie Hammonds, a forensics science teacher at the school, organized the activities on May 2, in which Lawrence County SWAT team were present to assist.
Students learned how to use equipment needed to deal with hazardous materials, how to enter a crime scene and practiced building entries.
They processed the crime scene, sealed evidence and decontaminated the area in a simulated fentanyl contamination.
Last month, they participated in a program at Ohio University Southern related to fentanyl. The event at CCTC augmented that experience.
Collins officials said they are grateful to OUS for use of an environmental trailer, and that the program is a big asset to the school.
