FRANKLIN FURNACE — Levi Singleton started the game like it was going to be a long night.
But he quickly righted the ship and made quick work of his pitching job by throwing only 70 pitches and tossing a no-hitter as the Green Bobcats beat the St. Joseph Flyers 10-1 on Wednesday.
Singleton struck out five, did not walk a batter and the run was unearned.
“They got down on him the first inning, but he settled down. He threw strikes and let his defense work for him,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.
“(St. Joseph pitchers) helped us a lot with a lot of walks to put runners on, but we got the hits to get them home.”
The Flyers used four pitchers who combined to walk 12 batters.
“We just couldn’t throw strikes. You aren’t going to win anytime you walk 12 guys,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant. “But Singleton threw the ball well. He did a good job.”
Singleton got a scare to start the seventh inning.
Isaac Whaley had a swinging bunt to lead off the seventh inning but Singleton pounced on the ball and threw out the runner at first base on a close play to preserve his no-hitter.
The Flyers (15-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Matt Sheridan reached on an error and Isaac Whaley was safe when his liner was thrown away for an error and put runners at second and third.
Michael Mahlmeister grounded out to score Sheridan.
Green (19-3) came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.
Eli Webb walked, stole second and scored when Tanner Kimbler singled.
The Bobcats took the lead with a run in the third.
Webb walked, stole second and Kimbler got an infield hit. Bryce Ponn was intentionally walked and Singleton grounded out to drive in Webb.
The scored remained that way until Green got four runs in the fifth.
Ponn, Singleton and Mason Barber all walked to load the bases. Trevor Darnell squeezed home a run and then Caden Brammer had a two-run double.
Caden Blizzard then singled home the fourth run.
Green scored four more runs scored in the sixth.
Singleton and Barber walked and then Brammer and Blizzard singled home runs.
Webb walked to load the bases and Kimbler hit a sacrifice fly and Tayte Carver singled in Blizzard with the final run.
Kimbler went 3-4, Webb 2-2, Blizzard 2-3 and Brammer 2-4 with a double and three RBI.
