Free event is Tuesday at Lawrence County Fairgrounds

ROME TOWNSHIP — The sixth annual Senior Day at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds is set for Tuesday and organizer Darlene Green says they have a full line-up of activities for the day.

“We’ll have free food — beans, cornbread and hot dogs,” she said. “And music and entertainment.”

She said numerous vendors will be set up, including many with health-related offerings such as blood pressure checks.

As they have in past years, students from Collins Career Technical Center will be on hand, doing free manicures and haircuts, while a new addition to the event will be a visit from a petting zoo.

“There’s going to be a car show and we’ll have old-fashioned cars, too,” Green said.

Food offered will include kettle corn, coffee and Danish, as well as a lunch, she said.

In addition, door prizes will be offered from many vendors.

Green said there is no cost for admission.

“Everything’s free, she said.

Green, who serves as director of the Chesapeake-Sybene Senior Center, has organized the event with the senior center’s board for several years. It has drawn more than 1,000 people to the fairgrounds in past years and attendance has increased each year.

Opening ceremonies are set for 9 a.m. and the event will run until 2 p.m.

The Lawrence County Commission will host their weekly meeting at the fairgrounds at 1 p.m.
