One bad apple doesn’t spoil the whole bunch, but one bad inning can ruin a game.
St. Joseph Flyers’ Isaac Whaley and South Webster Jeeps Billy Jones were locked in a scoreless pitcher’s duel on Tuesday when came the fifth inning.
The Jeeps scored the game’s only three runs in the top of the fifth with the aid of an error as they beat the Flyers 3-0 in the Division IV sectional finals.
“Same old story. We always seem to have that one inning that hurts us,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“Isaac Whaley threw extremely well. We hit balls hard all day but right at them. I can’t fault our effort.”
Jones threw 90 pitches of which 61 were strikes. He struck out five and walked one.
Whaley allowed only two earned runs, struck out four and walked four. Of the 108 pitches Whaley threw, 66 were strikes.
After four scoreless innings, Braden Martin left off with a double for the Jeeps. An out later, Cunningham singled and Jacob Ruth reached on an error to load the bases.
Riley Cook singled for a run and Brice Robnett doubled home two more runs.
St. Joseph (15-11) only managed singles by Matt Sheridan, Izsak “Sweet Feet” Unger and Whaley.
The Flyers got just two runners in scoring position.
Unger singled and stole second in the third inning while Jimmy Mahlmeister walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
