With spring cleaning comes garage sales and to help people out, Ironton is having a citywide yard sale on Saturday and the city is not charging the usual permit fee.

“It’s free,” said Ironton Mayor Katrina Keith. “The city is not charging the usual $10 fee this weekend, so people don’t have to come to the office and get that.”

For people who don’t want to set up at home, they can put up a table or two at Market Square and get more foot traffic from people shopping at Ironton aLive’s Ironton Farmers Market.

“There will not be a fee,” said Sam Heighton, executive director of Ironton aLive. “Arrive at the market by 8 a.m. to set up. You must stay with your items at the market till 3 p.m., when the sale ends or until you sell out.”

The Farmers Market will open as usual at 7 a.m. on Saturday and, besides the offering of produce, flowers and homemade goods, the parking lot and Bobby Bare Boulevard will be open for yard sales.

Keith has told the Ironton City Council that she would like to have a couple giant rummage sales during the summer.

“We want to give the people the ability to sell their unwanted goods,” she said. “It is a good way to recycle your stuff.”

She also said that it is a great way to bring people into Ironton.

“When you have that large of an event with people coming to hit a lot of places at one time, it brings people into our community,” Keith said. “We’re hoping that when they come in for that, maybe they will stop off and eat lunch, get gas and frequent some of the businesses we have here as well.”

As a reminder, people having yard sales are not allowed to post signs on utility poles and on city right-of-ways, since it is against city ordinance.

The signs will be removed.
