A sign posted in front of one of our area’s schools in the past year reads “The future begins here.”

And this is certainly the case, as our schools educating and grooming the generation of leaders for the Tri-State.

And some recent achievements by local students show that the future has a lot of promise.

South Point High School recently took place in the S.C.O.R.E.S. competition at Marshall University and the school dominated the event, taking first place, with several students winning scholarships and awards.

The competition takes place each year at Marshall University, drawing more than 1,000 students who choose from dozens of contests.

Rachel Wheeler was awarded  $300 from the Lewis College of Business, while Holly Ramey, Katelyn Mundy and Sara Allen all won the $5,000 S.C.O.R.E.S. Outstanding Student Award.

Paul Blazer High in Ashland came in second place and Chesapeake High scored third.

While, in Ironton, The Child Welfare Club honored the 11 winners of the Eddy Awards.

Jada Boggs, Natalie Carter, Bowen Gossett, Londyn Haney, Peyton McKnight, Tate Munion, Allison Shepherd, Kaitlyn Williams, Annika McCown, Landon Rowe and Molly Walker were all scored in the top third of the test, which is given to the top 25 percent of students at Ironton and St. Joseph high schools.

We commend all these winners, who represent some of the best and brightest of Lawrence County.
