Going six years strong

On Tuesday, the sixth annual Lawrence County Senior Day took place at the fairgrounds in Rome Township.

Since its inception in 2013, the event has seen continuous growth, with attendance this year topping 2,000, drawing hundreds more than last year.

In addition the number of vendor booths set up in the main barn during the five hours of festivities has climbed to about 100.  Organizers hope for that number to continue to climb, with Lawrence County Commission president Freddie Hayes Jr. setting a goal of 150 vendors for next year.

Senior Day is organized largely by the Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center. Its director Darlene Green and its board members work with individuals and groups from the community for months to build the event, which offers food, entertainment, a car show, a petting zoo, door prizes and other attractions, all free of charge.

Senior Day is a great public service to our county’s older residents and the work they have done to grow this tradition is amazing.

We congratulate all involved on another successful year and look forward to what they have in store for 2020.
