Gary Tyo
June 8, 1940 — May 15, 2019

Gary Wayne Tyo, 78, of Ironton, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
The Lawrence County native was born on June 8, 1940, the son of the late Arthur and Mayme Wineka Tyo. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Lois Alexander Tyo, whom he married on May 6, 1960.
Gary was a graduate of Coal Grove High School and a former social worker for Community Action Organization, where he worked for 25 years. He also worked previously at the Ironton Coke Plant. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #198 and Ice Creek Missionary Baptist Church.
Gary is survived by two daughters, Catherine Johnson, of Ironton, and Barbara (Brian) Sturgill, of Kitts Hill; two sons, Arthur Ray (Linda) Tyo, of Zanesville, and John Tyo, of Columbus; a sister, Karen Tyo, of South Point; five grandchildren, Jamie (Ryan) Barnhart, Mike Johnson, Rebecca Tyo, Darren Tyo and Brandon Sturgill; three great-grandchildren, Jude and Addison Barnhart and Nolan Johnson; a brother-in law, James Alexander; a sister-in-law, Faye Tyo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Gary was preceded in death by a son, Greg Tyo; a brother, the Rev. Ralph Tyo; and a granddaughter, Brianna Sturgill.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with Pastor Lenny Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Charles Massey
May 3, 2019 — May 15, 2019

Charles William Massey, 97, died Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Ashland Community Hospice.
He was the widower of Colleen Massey. He was born in Hinton, West Virginia to Doc and Minnie Ramsey Massey on May 3, 1920.
He was a member of First Methodist Church, Ironton, retired from C&O Railroad and a World War II Air Force veteran.
Survivors include three sons, Steve (Reginia) Massie, David “Rick” (Lisa) Massie, Mike Massey and Mike Fortin; grandchildren, Erika (Dan) Friesenhengst, Michelle (Jason) Mendoza, Stephanie (Matt) Fojas, Ashley (Josh) Castillo and Katie (Kerry) Green; great-grandchildren, Greysen and Aubrie Friesenhengst, Annabelle and Lillian Mendoza, Charlie and Bennett Fojas, and Kenny Green.
Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Mountain View Cemetery in Pulaski, Virginia. O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Stapleton
May 6, 1966 — May 15, 2019

Teresa Diane Stapleton, 53, of Ironton, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at her residence in Ironton.
The Ironton native was born May 6, 1966, a daughter of the late Vansel and Roseanna Rowe Stapleton.
Teresa attended Rock Hill Schools and was a homemaker. She was saved at the Forest Ridge Community Church and enjoyed attending the church services at Harbor Health Care.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Stapleton.
She is survived by her son, Josh (Brandy) Stapleton, of Huntington, West Virginia; her daughter, Michelle Robinson, of Proctorville; four grandchildren, Rose, Sam, Dylan and Jim Stapleton; a sister, Debbie (Les) Stambaugh, of Ironton; a brother, Tim (Myrtle) Stapleton, of Ironton; and her best friend, Regina Mullins Pauley, of Ironton.
Friends may call Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery at a late date.

Carl Russell
March 31, 1931 — May 16, 2019

Carl Russell, 88, of Kitts Hill, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Harbor Healthcare of Ironton.
He was born March 31, 1931 in Aid, son of the late Denver and Verga Brown Russell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara Gail Derifield Russell; two brothers, Forrest Payne and Robert Payne; and two sisters, Virginia Payne Wilson and Martha A. Zimmer.
Carl was a heavy equipment operator for Lawrence County Engineer’s Office and was a 52-year member of Ohio Operating Engineers, Local 18, District 3. He was a 1949 graduate of Kitts Hill High School, founding member of Aid Volunteer Fire Department, founding member and first elected member of Aid Cemetery and was a member of Rock Camp United Methodist Church.
Carl is survived by his three daughters, Elizabeth Russell Melvin of Ironton, Kathryn (Bill) Shope of Pedro, and Andrea (Donnie) Holbrook of Kitts Hill; two nieces that were raised in his home, Connie Jo Christian, of Willow Wood, and Carla (Benny) Sutton, of Knoxville, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Erica, Andrew, James, Tyler, Sarah, Olivia and Shyla; five great grandchildren, Isaac, Greyson, Allie, Josiah and Zion; three step great grandchildren, Landen, Meagan and Bethany; a special cousin, Juanita Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Community Hospice of Ashland, Kentucky and Harbor Healthcare of Ironton.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rock Camp United Methodist Church, County Road 6, Kitts Hill, with Pastor Brad Jenkins and Roger McCaleb officiating. Burial will follow at Melvin Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point.

Nelda Keys
June 23, 1927 — May 16, 2019

Nelda Lake Keys, 91, of Ironton, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2019, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky.
The Catlettsburg, Kentucky native was born June 23, 1927, the daughter of the late August and Myrtle Williams Guenther. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Don “Tuck” Keys Jr.
Mrs. Keys was a 1943 graduate of Thomas R Brown High School in Catlettsburg. She retired as a secretary from the Ford Brothers Trucking Company and owned and operated the Don Keys BBQ in Coal Grove. Nelda also worked for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Marathon Oil Company. She was a member of Central Christian Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Cox and Jack Cox; and four sisters, Jean Richardson, Joyce Jarrell, Kay Taylor and Linda Branham.
She is survived by two daughters, Tomie (Tom) Lintner, of Ironton, and Jackie (Doug) Moore, of Catlettsburg; two sisters, Del (Aldon) Ferguson, of Kenova, West Virginia, and Bobbie (Dewey) Jones, of Lexington, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Charlie (Steve) Shelton and Chad Lintner, both of Kitts Hill; and three great-grandchildren, Tyler Shelton, Tessa Shelton, and Lane Lintner.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, 518 S. Sixth St. Ironton, with Minister Willie Purdee officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Peggy Lawson
Peggy E. Lawson, 95, of Huntington, West Virginia died Thursday, May 16, 2019, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington.
A Christian memorial service will be held at a later date. Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, is assisting the family with arrangements.
