SOUTH POINT — The traveling trophy is back at Burlington Elementary.

Fifth grade students from the school defeated their rivals at South Point Elementary on Monday, in the tug of war competition at the school’s joint Field Day.

The trophy was in Burlington’s hands for several years, before being won last year by South Point.

Burlington principal Michael Clay congratulated the students and held the trophy high.

The tug of war is an annual competition when the schools meet, with the two graduating classes who will be classmates at South Point Middle School in the fall, facing off.

It was the culmination of the event at South Point Elementary, in which intermediate students from the two schools competed in relays, races, potato sack races and tug of war competitions.

“We have third through fifth grades here today,” South Point assistant principal Bill Christian said.

In the past, the Field Day between the two schools has been a two-day event, but this year, primary students competed in events at their individual schools, which took place last week.

Both schools are set to host graduation ceremonies for their fifth grade students on Friday.
