Thomas leads state meet qualifiers

Track season got a week longer for some area athletes.
The top four finishers in each event at Saturday’s regional meets advanced to the Ohio High School Athletic Association state track and field meet to be held Friday at Saturday at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.
In the Division III regional meet at Lancaster Fairfield Union High School, Coal Grove Lady Hornets Kylee Thomas headed the list of qualifiers as she earned a trip to the state meet in two events as she was third in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.37 time and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at 46.90 seconds.
Coal Grove’s 4×100-meter relay team got a ticket to the state meet as Justin Hicks, Greg Keeney, Austin Stormes and Kyles Sites had a 44.88 time and finished fourth.
Green’s Zach Huffman was seventh in the 110-meter high hurdles with a 15.92 time but got a state trip anyway as he placed third in the 300-meter hurdles at 40.36 seconds.
The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers’ 4×100-meter relay was edged out of a state meet trip by Grandview Heights.
Ironton’s quartet of Loralei Griffiths, Erica Collins, Lilly Zornes and Kyleigh Pauley ran a 51.76 while Grandview had a 51.08 time.
Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ pole vaulter Lauren Holliday cleared 9-feet and was seventh.
Chesapeake Lady Panthers Kelsie Hegemeyer ran a 5:33.04 to finish eighth in the 1600-meter run.
The Hornets 4×200-meter relay team of Hicks, Evan Holmes and Kyle Sites was eighth with a 1:35.83 clocking.
The Green Bobcats. Ethan Huffman leaped 6-1 and was fifth in the high jump as he missed a state trip with two misses while South Gallia’s Kyle Northrup did not miss the height.
Coal Grove’s Ben Compliment was ninth in the shot put at 46-1.25 and 10th in the discus at 127-11.
Hornets’ Jed Whitworth was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.64 seconds while Liam Dennis of Mount Gilead was fourth at 15.60.
The Hornets’ Dylan French at a 2:06.11 in the 800 meters and was 11th.
In the 3200 meters, Green’s James Hallam ran an 11:00.27 and was 14th.
The Division II regional track meet was held at Muskingum University.
In the boys’ meet on Thursday, Rock Hill’s T.J. McGinnis threw the discus 143-feet and one-inch and finished seventh.
Chesapeake Panthers’ Kamren Harless leaped 20-3.25 and was ninth in the long jump while teammate Brady Wilson cleared 12-feet and was ninth in the pole vault.
In the girls’ meet, Fairland Lady Dragons Allie Marshall went 4-10 and was seventh in the high jump.
Final results in all remaining events have not yet been made available.
