The Lawrence County Commission voted at last week’s meeting to award a $190,168 bid for slip repair work on County Road 2.

The bid, to Skeens Excavating, is for work in the Greasy Ridge area, which County Engineer Patrick Leighty expects to begin in about a month.

He said the project will have to first be approved by the Ohio Department of Transportation before work can begin.

The slip has been a cause of concern for residents in the area for the past year.

“Once that’s awarded, we can sign the contract,” Leighty said.

In other business, the commission:

• Discussed Township Road 128, which commissioner DeAnna Holliday said she had researched and found was still on the county’s inventory list.

She said there had been a request to vacate the road years ago, but no action had been taken.

The road is of historical interest, according to Dave Lucas, who has researched the area. He said it was the site of the first furnace in the area, Union Furnace.

“A lot of the stones are still present in the bank,” he said. “But the structure is long gone.”

Lucas said the road would be of interest to historians who would want to tour the site, which he said was once home to a “substantial” settlement of about 180 people. He said it would also help with access to homes in the area.

Holliday said they have received notice from ODOT on the matter and a letter can be sent to township trustees.

“What they do at that point is up to them,” she said.

• Heard from commission president Freddie Hayes Jr., who said this year’s Senior Day at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds was a success. Hayes said there was record attendance in excess of 2,000 people.

“It was unbelievable,” he said, and commended Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center director Darlene Green and organizers for their work.

• Voted unanimously to approve a bid to replace windows at the Chesapeake Community Center.
