On Tuesday, Open Door School played host to the community, with an event geared toward bringing together developmental disability agencies, service providers and advocacy groups to plan for the future.
A Developmental Disabilities Community Roundup took place, and Tim Nunnery, director of Communications and Resource Development for Lawrence County Developmental Disabilities, said it was to unite the community.
“We’re bringing everyone together,” he said. “Those who serve people with developmental disabilities in Lawrence County, everybody with developmental disabilities. And we’ve invited Lawrence County in general to come out and support us.”
A large crowd turned out for the event, taking advantage of the pleasant weather. Hot dogs and food were served, inflatables and games were set up for families and children enjoyed the school’s sandbox and playground.
Nunnery said groups represented at the event included Person Centered Services, NECCO, Easter Seals, The Arc, Special Olympics and Special Needs Youth Sportsmen.
Jeffrey Davis, the state director for the Department of Developmental Disabilities, was the keynote speaker for the event.
