The 2019 Major League Baseball Draft finished up on Wednesday, with the Reds adding plenty of new talent that they hope will follow in the footsteps of Joey Votto, Jesse Winker, Nick Senzel and other homegrown talent on the big-league level.
MLB.com’s Jim Callis listed the Reds among the seven teams with the best draft hauls this year.
The club took the draft’s top-ranked pitcher, lefty Nick Lodolo from TCU, with their first-round pick (seventh overall) before turning to power-hitting high school prospects Rece Hinds and Tyler Callihan in rounds two and three.
In the middle and late portions of the draft, the Reds focused more on college talent, ending up with 28 collegiate picks out of the 40 overall selections.
Among the late picks of note, the Reds selected University of Cincinnati outfielder A.J. Bumpass in the 39th round.
Bumpass had previously been picked by the Reds in the 2017 draft before returning to school.
