RUSSELL — Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s breast health navigator Christy Coovert, MSN, RN, CBCN, OCN, is now a Certified Breast Care Nurse through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

Nursing certification is a process to validate a registered nurse’s qualification and knowledge. The ONCC is the premier provider of nationally accredited certifications in oncology.

Coovert has served as a breast health navigator in the OLBH Women’s Center since December of 2017. Her responsibility as breast health navigator is to guide patients through the medical processes. A nurse navigator serves as a patient educator and advocate, a care coordinator, a system advocate and a community ambassador on a mission to improve the breast care experience for each patient. Coovert also serves as a support system for the patient and her family at a critical time — after diagnosis and through treatment — and serves as a gateway to the full range of services available to the patient at OLBH.

The OLBH Women’s Center, located on the ground floor of Bellefonte Centre (1000 Ashland Drive), combines breast health services in one location, eliminating the necessity for multiple appointments and prolonged waiting for women. The OLBH Women’s Center is the first in Kentucky to offer automated breast ultrasound system (ABUS) to screen for cancer in women with dense breast tissue. The center also offers 3-D mammography, patient-assisted compression, breast ultrasound, minimally invasive breast biopsy, a DEXA densitometer to screen for bone density, genetic testing, clinical breast exams, a women’s health library, and the OLBH Women’s Center Boutique.
