On Monday morning, motorists on Third Street in Ironton were stopped by a flagger, but they soon found the delay was because of something that has long been sought by the city.

A crew from Pinkerman’s Excavating and Construction began demolishing the Shenanigans bar, taking the building down by day’s end.

By week’s end, the lot will be cleaned of rubble and it will be brought up to construction grade and sold.

The Shenanigans demolition was the 200th structure taken down by the Lawrence County Land Bank and the second commercial structure.

The land bank tore down the former Pulley’s nursing home in Burlington to mark its 100th demolition last year.

The group targets properties that have been abandoned and are a year delinquent on taxes. In many cases, these are problem buildings that Ironton and villages have long wanted rid of.

We commend the land bank in its work in taking down eyesores and removing blight.  The amount of work they’ve done over these past two years is quite a feat.

Hopefully, lots such at the one that Shenanigans occupied will be developed into more businesses for our region.
