William Washburn

Oct. 20, 1924 – July 19, 2019

William Clifford “Bill” Washburn, 94, of Ironton, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 at a local health care facility. Mr. Washburn was born Oct. 20, 1924 in Ironton, a son to the late Joseph and Florence (Wilds) Washburn. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Virginia June (Henthorne) Washburn whom he married Aug. 15, 1948 and passed away on Dec. 23, 2010.

Bill was a 1943 graduate of Ironton High School and a long time member of Central Christian Church. Bill proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the 485th Bomb Group 828th Bomb Squadron. He fought in the Battles of Rhineland (Germany), North Appennines (Italy) and the Balkans campaign and received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and the Victory Medal. Bill was a POW/MIA in 1943 after the airplane he was on was shot down over Yugoslavia.

Bill served 25 years with the Ironton Fire Department and retired in 1975 as captain. He also worked many years with the Lawrence County Soil Conservation Department and was the secretary for the Lawrence County Water Shed District. Bill was one of the founding fathers and past presidents of the Ironton Little League and in 2001, he served as the Honorary Grand Marshall for the Ironton Memorial Day Parade. He was also a former member of the Ironton Elks, V.F.W., and AmVets. In his spare time Bill loved to play golf and was a long time member of the Ironton Country Club and was also well known for riding his bicycle all around town.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters

He is survived by two sons, Bill (Mary Kay) Washburn of Ironton and Dave (John Thompson) Washburn of Nashville, Tennessee; two grandsons, Brian (Bridget) Washburn of Hurricane, West Virginia and Brad (Mandy) Washburn of Circleville; granddaughter: Katie (Eli) Dalton of Ironton; five great-grandchildren: Brianna and Will Washburn both of Hurricane, West Virginia; and Lily, Olivia and Addison Dalton, all of Ironton.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral home. 1004 S. 7th St., Ironton, with Rev. Steve Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by VFW Post #8850. The Washburn family will receive friends Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.

Vivian Humphrey

June 30, 1921 – July 22, 2019

Vivian (Love) Humphrey, 98, of Bald Knob, passed away Monday, July 22, 2019 at her home.

The Lawrence County native was born June 30, 1921, a daughter of the late Jasper and Florence (Baldwin) Love. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Luther Humphrey, whom she married Nov. 14, 1945.

Mrs. Humphrey was a graduate of Windsor High School. She was an assembly line worker for Polan Industries. Mrs. Humphrey attended Bald Knob Church and was a member of Windsor Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Telisa Humphrey; a great granddaughter, Peyton Humphrey; and a sister and brother-in-law: Violet and Raymond Miller.

She is survived by three sons, Jack (Kay) Humphrey, Jeff (Cassi) Humphrey and Rodger (Diana) Humphrey; three daughters, Sandra Humphrey, Nancy (Fred) Blankenship, and Joy (Bill) Tackett; brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Susie Love; fifteen grandchildren, Jason (Vicki) Humphrey, Lance Humphrey, Sarah (Jamie) Rice, Lora (Aaron) Freeman, SSGT John Blankenship, Eric (Loretta) Tackett, Julie (Brian) Skaggs,, Luke (Beth) Tackett, Timothy (Kristen) Humphrey, Dustin (Courtney) Humphrey, Tracy (Zach) Carey, Meagan Kerns, Hilary Humphrey, Zachary Humphrey, Hannah Humphrey; twenty great-grandchildren: Eilee and Eli Freeman, Jaida Kelley, Ethan Rice, Emma and Joshua Humphrey, Brooke, Carter and Cailey Carter, Kenli Skaggs, Noah, Jonas and Axel Humphrey, Jace Humphrey, Layce Kerns, Ellie Tackett, John and Holly Blankenship, Ben and Silas Humphrey.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, in Myrtle Ridge Cemetery. There will be no public visitation and Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. 7th St., Ironton, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

William Roberts

William Roberts, 82, of Ironton, died Monday, July 22, 2019 at the Harbor Health Care in Ironton.

Arrangements are pending Brown Funeral Chapel.

Hazel Kees

Hazel Deane Wood Kees, 89, died July 14, 2019 at Wyngate Assisted Living in Proctorville.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville, with Pastor Jamie Gump officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before at the funeral home.
