On Monday, a four-decade-old mystery comes to an end.

In 1981, the body of woman was found in a cistern near Dobbstown. She had no wallet, no identification. Just a few random items like a rubber band, an old bus ticket and a locker key for the Huntington bus station. An autopsy revealed she had a broken neck.

But no one knew who she was or whether she was from here or another state.

No one claimed her and she was buried in an unmarked grave. At some point, she was given the name of “Belle in the Well.”

But the search for her true identity never stopped.

In 2011, her grave was opened and DNA was taken in hopes of getting a match. In 2012, a clay model was made of what she might look like. Still, no one came forward to claim her. Last March, another model was made. Still nothing.

Then on Thursday, Lawrence County Coroner Ben Mack sent out a message that the Belle’s true identity will be revealed at a press conference on Monday.

It is our hope that the Belle will finally get a proper burial under her given name.

No one should end up unknown and their name lost to time.
