MINFORD — For nearly three-quarters of the game, the South Point Pointers were sitting on a possible upset.
But the final 22 minutes were anything but kind to the Pointers who lost 5-1 to the Minford Falcons on Thursday.
South Point led 1-0 at the end of the first half and Minford didn’t score until Zane Miller’s unassisted goal at the 58-minute mark.
After that, the Falcons scored four goals in a matter of 16 minutes.
“The first half we played about as good as I could have possibly asked,” said Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins. “We connected passes well, our defense played really solid and we were the aggressors.”
But then came the second half.
“The second half was a total 180. Minford’s experience and aggression took control of the game and had us playing on our heels the entire 40 minutes. They are big, fast and play physical and it wore us down over the course of 80 minutes,” said Jenkins.
South Point took a 1-0 lead with 24:00 on the first half clock as Tyler Lilly scored off an assist from Levi Lawson.
The score didn’t change until Miller’s goal and it was followed by goals by Adam Cordle, Brayden Davis and two more from Cordle.
One bright spot for the Pointers was senior goalkeeper Brody Blackwell who had 18 saves.
South Point was without senior captain Carmie McGuffin due to an injury, leaving the Pointers often with five freshmen in the field.
“It may not look like it, but our defense stood the challenge for 70 minutes tonight. Minford was just relentless,” said Jenkins.
The Pointers host St. Joseph at 10 a.m. Saturday.
