Showing what is possible

Lawrence County has a tradition of agriculture that goes back generations.

While the county may not have as many farms as it did in decades past, it is still a large presence here.

We see it each year at the Lawrence County fair, when hundreds of students from 4-H and FFA compete in the various animal contests. And we encounter it throughout the county, whether its companies like Good News Llamas, of Chesapeake, who raise a heard of the animals and sell products through Back Porch Fibers, or the many small farms that offer products ranging from dairy to ample syrup to wool.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the county’s farming will be showcased at the second annual Bringing the Farm to You event at the fairgrounds.

Sponsored by the Lawrence County farm Bureau, the event will host a number of vendors and agencies, showing all aspects of the industry in the county. And there will be a sizable children’s area offering educational opportunities.

We encourage everyone to attend. Not only will it support local farmers, but, by seeing what is possible, it may inspire county residents to partake in farming of their own and expand the industry.
