COAL GROVE — It was a game of big plays and the Coal Grove Hornets just couldn’t make enough of them.
The Hornets moved the ball and got some big plays, but the Lucasville Valley Indians made just a couple more as they pulled away late to a 34-19 win on Friday night.
Valley (1-1) scored on its first possession of the game with a 75-yard, nine-play drive keyed by a 21-yard catch and run by Devin Wiley for a first down to the Coal Grove 39.
Andronis capped the drive with a 4-yard run. Austin Sommers kicked the conversion and it was 7-0 at the 6:18 mark.
The Hornets (1-1) scored with just seven seconds left in the half.
A bad snap on a punt gave Coal Grove the ball at the Valley 35 and on fourth down and 4 at the 29, Cory Borders threw to Austin Stormes who caught a tipped ball at the goal line and hauled it in for the score.
The conversion kick failed.
A 46-yard pass to Colton Buckle highlighted the Indians’ opening drive of the second half as they went 66 yards in just six plays for a touchdown.
Tre Brachett ran 6 yards for the TD and the lead was 14-6 at the 8:56 mark.
Coal Grove answered with a 71-yard, nine-play drive the culminated on a pass to Malachai Wheeler who made a nice move and raced into the end zone to complete a 30-yard play.
The conversion pass failed and it was 14-12 with 5:46 on the clock.
The Indians had a 72-yard, five-play drive just before the end of the third quarter with Andronis scrambling 29 yards for the touchdown and a 21-12 lead.
But Stormes returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards as he electrified the crowd and J.C. Damron’s kick cut the deficit to just 21-19 with 11 seconds left.
Valley got some breathing room with a 61-yard, 10-play drive as Andronis scored from 2 yards out with 4:39 to play and it was 28-19.
Coal Grove tried to answer but the Indians came up with an interception just three plays later and had the ball at the Hornets’ 43.
On a fourth 3, the Hornets jammed the line of scrimmage only to have Kayden Mollette bounce outside and race down the sidelines on a 36-yard touchdown run to seal the outcome with 1:43 to play.
Stapleton led Coal Grove with 93 yards on 17 carries while Borders was 7-of-20 passing for 120 yards.
Stormes had a solid all-around game with 27 yards rushing on five carries and he caught four passes for 65 yards and a score to go with his kickoff return.
Mollette ran 22 times for 132 yards for the Indians with Andronis rushing 15 times for 100 yards and hitting 10-of-17 passing for 145 yards.
