SOUTH POINT — One look at the score and fans would think this was a tough, back-and-forth soccer game.
They’re right.
Defenses for the South Point Pointers and Fairland Dragons matched each other all night with the Pointers finding a way to sneak in a goal as they got a 1-0 Ohio Valley Conference win on Tuesday.
“It seemed to be a lot like a volleyball or tennis match. Not a whole lot of midfield play, just kickball for the most part,” said Pointers’ coach Zach Jenkins.
The game’s lone goal came when Ryan Goodson scored at the 33-minute mark.
Tyler Lilly came off a run up the flank and found Braylon Balandra at the corner of the 18 box and he managed to get the ball to Goodson around the penalty kick spot and the Pointers’ senior captain didn’t miss.
“Ryan put in a good shot from the corner,” said Jenkins. “(Fairland goalie Jacob) Polcyn is as good a keeper as we’ve seen so he had to make a good strike. We played more into the hands of Fairland’s attack rather than our play. We just executed right when we needed.”
Pointers’ goalie Brody Blackwell had nine saves while Polcyn got 13.
The Pointers seventh straight win makes them 7-3 on the season and 5-1 in the OVC.
South Point hosts Portsmouth next Tuesday in a league game.
