The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers will never be linked to the Mafia, but they had their own pair of “hitmen” on Tuesday.
Riley Schreck racked up 13 kills including five in the deciding fifth set to go with five blocks while Samantha LaFon had 12 kills plus three blocks at Ironton outlasted the Russell Lady Red Devils in five sets, 24-26, 25-16, 14-25, 25-19 and 15-7.
“Riley Schreck had a great effort tonight at the net. She did a great job of hitting the right angles and scoring at crucial times,” said Ironton coach Beth Campbell.
But Schreck and LaFon’s imitation of The Godfather movie hitmen Luca Brasi and Willie Cicci wasn’t the only contributors in the hard-fought win.
Peighton Rowe had nine points including an ace and defensively she had 13 digs. Schreck had nine digs, Evan Williams seven and LaFon six.
Lydia Hannan, Marybeth Burton and Kameren Arden had six points each and Devin Forest two.
Burton also had five kills and six blocks, Kayleigh Collins four blocks and Forest had three kills and three blocks.
“The girls were fun to watch tonight,” said Campbell. “The girls definitely pulled together as one and achieved their goal for a victory. They were very selfless tonight and played for each other.”
