SOUTH POINT — A cleaning company is now offering a new location in Lawrence County.

Green Earth Cleaners, formerly Cardinal Cleaners, has been a family-owned business in Ashland for 100 years and has four locations in Kentucky.

The company uses silicone, an environmentally non-toxic, non-hazardous and gentle alternative to petrochemicals, which they say is designed to ensure the best possible result for fabrics and the environment.

Green Earth will now provide service in South Point.

Marcia Horsley, manager of the company, said they specialize in dry cleaning of all types, household items, like drapes and comforters, and alterations for things like wedding dresses.

“We also do wedding preservation with boxes,” she said.

She said the company’s service to South Point will be next day on same day drop off and two days on regular service.

Mary Cogan, owner of South Point Storage, said her business, located at 602 Solida Rd., will serve as the site for the company, which will start in the next week.

The new site came about after South Point Mayor Jeff Gaskin went to Ashland for dry cleaning service.

“I was at the window one day and told them I’d like a pick up in South Point,” he said. “I gave them my number and talked to a guy a while. He told me what kind of company would be needed for a pickup location and, it turned out, Mary had that type of business. I put the two together and that’s it.”

Customers can drop off items during business hours, which run from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Customers will be able to pick up items at the same South Point location, Cogan said.

Gaskin said he welcomed the move.

“It may not be a big industry with a lot of jobs, but it will sure be convenient to be able to pick up in South Point,” he said.
