An assistant band director has been fired after an accusation of improper conduct with students.

South Point Local Schools released a statement on Facebook on Monday morning on the matter.

“Upon learning of misconduct by an assistant band director, school administrators immediately made reports to law enforcement and to Children’s Services,” the statement said.

At a meeting on Nov. 14, the board of education terminated the assistant band director’s contract and banned him from all school property and school functions.

“He will not be performing any further duties for the school district,” the statement from the school read. The district said that it would not be commenting further on the matter because it is being investigated by law enforcement and “Other than taking necessary actions to end his employment and ban him from school district property, further comment or publication regarding the misconduct was not and is not appropriate.”

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation on Monday morning and he is also not releasing many details at this time.

“We have been contacted by the South Point school district about a possible misconduct between an assistant band director and some students,” he said. “And we are investigating that.”

He said detectives are interviewing people and names and other details of the situation won’t be released until later.

“We are in the very early stages and I don’t want to ruin someone if the accusations are unfounded,” Lawless said, adding he might be able to release later Monday after talking to detectives.
