Someone must have slipped it into the fine print of the contract.
The St. Joseph Flyers and Rock Hill Redmen play a home-and-home series every season, and every season it seems that the two teams play at least one overtime game.
That was the case on Tuesday as the teams opened the season with the Flyers getting a 65-62 overtime win over the Redmen.
St. Joseph took a 19-15 lead in the first quarter as Roach drained a trifecta and scored 8 points, Payne knocked down two 3-pointers and Mahlmeister had 5 points including a triple.
Stamper had 5 points including three foul shots and Logan Hankins hit a 3-pointer to keep the Redmen within striking distance.
The Flyers extended their lead to 35-24 at the break as Jackson Rowe came off the bench and buried three shots from behind the arc and Payne added another.
Caleb Davis hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points with Malone getting 4 points for the Redmen.
But the Flyers went cold and scored just 7 points in the third quarter and Rock Hill took advantage by getting 18 points to take a 44-42 lead at the end of the stanza.
The comeback was fueled by a 10-0 run that put the Redmen up 37-36 with 5:10 left in the quarter. Malone scored 6 points and Logan Hankins drilled two more triples in the quarter.
St. Joseph found its shooting touch again in the fourth quarter and the teams battled to a 60-all tie at the end of regulation.
Roach scored 8 points and Mahlmeister had 6 points to rally the Flyers. Owen Hankins had 5 points, Malone scored 4 and Logan Hankins hit another trifecta for the Redmen.
In overtime, the Flyers outscored the Redmen 5-2 as Damron scored two points, Payne went 2-for-2 at the line and Matt Sheridan 1-of-2.
Stamper had Rock Hill’s only basket in the extra four-minute quarter.
On Friday, Rock Hill hosts Wellston and St. Joseph entertains Sciotoville East.
