SCIOTOVILLE — Forget the slow cooker. The St. Joseph Lady Flyers like a pressure cooker.
Trailing after the first quarter, the Lady Flyers applied the press and outscored the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 34-5 over the next two quarters and posted a 51-25 Southern Ohio Conference win on Monday.
“We started pressing in the second and third quarters and that got us into a rhythm,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
“It hurt not having Emilee tonight. She does so many things that don’t show up in the box score. But the other girls picked it up and all eight contributed.”
Emma Whaley led the St. Joseph offense with 19 points while Bella Whaley had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Faith Mahlmeister grabbed seven rebounds, Gracie Damron pulled down six with Aubrey Sutton and Emma Whaley getting five each Chloe Sheridan four and Kerri Jenkins three.
Kaitlyn Sheridan had five rebounds and four assists.
East led 8-7 after the first quarter as Mia Caldwell and Kacie Conley hit 3-pointers. Emma Whaley scored 5 points including a trifecta.
The Lady Flyers turned up the pressure in the second quarter and outscored East 18-5. Five players scored with Emma Whaley getting 10 points.
The flurry continued in the third quarter as St. Joseph blanked East 16-0. Bella Whaley scored 8 points and Kaitlyn Sheridan got 4 more.
The Lady Flyers eased up in the fourth quarter and East outscored them 12-10 as Conley got 7 points and Betty Osborne hit a 3-pointer.
Conley had 11 points to lead East.
St. Joseph plays at Green on Thursday.
