Lady Hornets slip by Lady Panthers

CHESAPEAKE — When you give the Coal Grove Lady Hornets free shots, they make them.
The Lady Hornets converted 19-of-35 free throw attempts as they held off the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 45-36 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
Abbey Hicks scored 13 points and Addi Dillow 10 to lead a balanced offense for Coal Grove (5-0, 3-0). Kaleigh Murphy added 9 points.
Maddie Ward scored a game-high 17 points for the Lady Panthers (2-3, 2-2).
The game was tied 10-10 after the first quarter as Dillow scored 4 points for Coal Grove and Ward had 7 points for the Lady Panthers.
Hicks scored 7 points in the second quarter and Rylee Harmon had all 3 of her points to give the Lady Hornets a 25-21 halftime lead.
Ward scored 6 of Chesapeake’s 11 points in the quarter.
Coal Grove got some breathing room in the third quarter as Chesapeake managed just 4 points.
Jaiden Griffith had 5 points as Coal Grove went ahead 36-25.
Taylor Hicks hit a trey and Sammie McComas scored 4 points as Chesapeake got within 40-36 with 2:30 to play, but the Lady Hornets converted 7-of-8 at the foul line with Dillow making 3-of-4 and Murphy and Hicks 2-of-2.
On Saturday, Coal Grove goes to Southeastern and Chesapeake hosts Grace Christian. Both games are at 2:30 p.m.
