WESTWOOD, Ky. — Don’t be surprised if coach Bart Burcham brings a battery and jumper cables to the next game.
The St. Joseph Lady Flyers had yet another slow start and couldn’t recover as they fell to the unbeaten Fairview Lady Eagles 58-49 on Monday.
The Lady Flyers fell behind by 10 points in the first quarter and then outscored the Lady Eagles by a point over the next three quarters.
“Once we got aggressive and started cutting aggressively and looked to attack in the second quarter, we played really well,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
“The girls played so hard. We got down big early but cut it to five and couldn’t get any closer. Fairview has a really good team with shooters.”
The shooters Burcham was referring to were Jordan Rakes who scored 25 points and Gracie Crisp who had 23 points to lead Fairview (9-0).
Crisp and Hanshaw combined for 13 points as Fairview took an 18-8 lead. Emma Whaley had 5 points and she and Bella Whaley each hit a 3-pointer.
Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter and it was 30-20 at the half.
Mahlemeister and Bella Whaley scored 5 points each in the quarter while Rakes had 6 for Fairview.
The Lady Flyers outscored Fairview 15-14 in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 5 points at one time before Fairview made it 44-35.
Emma Whaley hit a pair of treys and Bella Whaley had 4 points as the Lady Flyers tried to make a comeback.
Crips hit a 3-pointers and scored 9 points to keep Fairview in front.
Mahlmeister scored 6 points in the fourth quarter but Rakes had 12 points including 5-of-6 at the line.
The Lady Eagles were 16-of-19 at the line while the Lady Flyers were 4-of-8.
