Big 3rd quarter keys Lady Panthers’ win

CHESAPEAKE — Now that’s the kind of quarter you like to see after a tough first half.
Leading by only 8 points at halftime, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers exploded in the third quarter as they rolled past the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings 63-38 on Monday.
Maddie Ward had 18 points, Blake Anderson 14 and Sammie McComas added 10 for the Lady Panthers (5-5).
Rachael Hayes had 12 points for Symmes Valley (3-7).
Ward scored 6 points and McComas 4 in the first quarter as Chesapeake took a 16-10 lead. Taylor Sells hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Lady Vikings.
Anderson and McComas scored 4 points each as the Lady Panthers went up 29-21 at the half.
Symmes Valley got within 2 points before a couple of crucial turnovers helped Chesapeake pull away. Hayes had 7 points including 5-of-5 form the foul line.
Then came the pivotal third quarter.
Ward hit a pair of 3-pointers and Anderson had a trey as Chesapeake outscored the Lady Vikings 25-5 to open up a comfortable 54-26 cushion.
The Lady Panthers were 10-of-13 from the foul line in the quarter. Anderson and Ward each went 3-for-4 while Taylor Hicks and Emily Duncan were 2-for-2.
Symmes Valley outscored Chesapeake 12-9 in the fourth quarter. Peyton Hunter hit a triple and scored 5 points and Hailee Littlejohn had 5 points to pace the Lady Vikings. Kandace Pauley scored 4 to lead Chesapeake.
Chesapeake visits South Point next Monday. Symmes Valley host St. Joseph on Thursday.
