LATHAM — Petula Clark sang the song, “Downtown.” The Western Indians must have decided to use it for their theme song Friday night.
The Indians were shooting from “downtown” as they made 15 3-point goals and upset the Symmes Valley Vikings 82-70 in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
Kolten Miller and Max Ferneau each made six 3-pointers to lead the long-range shooting. Miller finished with 28 points and Ferneau 22. Clton Montrgomery added 10 points.
Symmes Valley got their own 28-point performance from Jack Leith that included 8-of-10 from the foul line. He also had 10 rebounds.
The Vikings (8-5, 5-3) had four players in double figures as Drew Scherer scored 12, Caden Brammer 11 and Luke Leith had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Western came out sizzling as Ferneau hit six 3-pointers and Coleman Gibson and Montgomery also had treys and it was 28-15.
Jack Leith scored 10 points and Scherer hit a 3-pointer for the Vikings.
In the second quarter, Miller hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points, Montgomery had 5 and Gibson another triple as the Indians took a 43-32 halftime lead.
Luke and Jack Leith scored 6 points each for the Vikings.
Miller did his imitation of Ferneau in the third quarter as he knocked down five 3-pointers to extend the Western lead to 64-44.
Jack Leith scored half of the Vikings’ 12 points.
Symmes Valley mounted a rally in the fourth quarter with Brammer hit a 3-pointer and scoring 9 points, Jack Leith and Scherer 6 points each and Logan Walsh 5 points in a 25-point quarter.
But Western sank 14-of-19 free throw attempts to end any comeback hopes.
