Instead of down and out, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers want to go down and in.
The Lady Flyers turned in another strong defensive effort but now they just need to cut down on turnovers and get more shots to go in the basket.
Turnovers and cold shooting were their downfall as they lost to the Fairview Lady Eagles 45-37 on Monday.
“We had too many turnovers that led to easy points for them. We have to be strong with the ball,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
“When we cut down on the turnovers and a few shots start falling, we’ll be fine. But we’re keeping ourselves in these games and giving ourselves a chance.”
In a loss earlier this season, Fairview’s Jordan Rakes had 25 points and Gracie Crisp 23. However, this time, Rakes was held to 14 and Crisp to 9.
Rachel Hanshaw scored 10 points as Fairview improved to 15-3.
Bella Whaley had a monster game for the Lady Flyers with a game-high 23 points along with 15 rebounds. Faith Mahlmeister added 9 points and 7 rebounds for St. Joseph (8-9).
Josey Nelson scored 4 points and Hanshaw hit a 3-pointer as Fairview took an 11-10 first quarter lead.
Crisp had a basket that gave her 1,000 career points.
Whaley scored 6 points for St. Joseph.
Crisp got 7 points in the second quarter as Fairview went up 20-14 at the half. Whaley made two free throws and Mahlmeister had a basket to account for the Lady Flyers’ scoring.
Rakes scored 8 points in the third quarter as Fairview opened up a 37-25 lead. Whaley had 9 of the Lady Flyers’ 11 points.
Emma Whaley’s 3-pointer with 2:14 to play got the Lady Flyers within 6 points, but Rakes scored 4 points to offset Bella Whaley going 4-for-4 at the foul line and scoring 6 points in the quarter as Fairview held on for the win.
