ASHLAND, Ky. — There are two things that the St. Joseph Lady Flyers like to hand their hat on: defense and rebounding.
The Lady Flyers must have been wearing their Easter bonnets on Tuesday.
St. Joseph limited the Rose Hill Lady Royals to just 8 points in the first half and also pulled down 42 rebounds in a 54-34 win.
“The girls played great defense. We got our offense going a little bit the past two or three games, but no matter what these girls have continued to play defense and rebound,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
Emma Whaley scored 15 points, Faith Mahlmeister had 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds and Bella Whaley had another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Lady Flyers (10-10).
Chloe Sheridan had 6 rebounds while Gracie Damron got 6 points and 5 rebounds. Kaitlyn Sheridan had 7 assists.
Baylee Trimble scored 11 points and Delaynee Sparks added 8 points for Rose Hill (8-8).
Bella Whaley hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points as St. Joseph took a 13-8 first quarter lead. Trimble had 4 points for the Lady Royals.
The St. Joseph defense held Rose Hill scoreless in the second quarter and Emma Whaley had 4 points as the lead went to 24-8 at the break.
Trimble hit a 3-poitner and had 5 points while Bellamee Sparks hit a triple and had 4 points to help Rose Hill slice the deficit to 35-21.
Mahlmeister scored 6 points and Emma Whaley hit a trifecta to keep the Lady Flyers ahead.
The offense kicked into gear in the fourth quarter with Emma Whaley scoring 6 points including 4-of-4 at the foul line while Chloe Sheridan and Damron scored 4 points each.
On Thursday, St. Joseph visits Portsmouth Clay.
