GALLIPOLIS — The showdown just became a possible winner-take-all.
The Fairland Dragons were looking to head into Friday’s game at Chesapeake as a showdown for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.
But the Gallipolis Blue Devils were focused on the here-and-now as they stunned the Dragons 55-47 on Tuesday in an OVC game.
The loss was the first in the OVC for the Dragons who are now tied with Chesapeake at 10-1 in the league meaning the winner will have a one-game lead with two league games to play.
Fairland (16-2) made 19-of-41 field goal attempts for 41 percent but were a season-low 2-of-11 form behind the 3-point line.
Jacob Polcyn had 18 points before fouling out, Clayton Thomas had 13 points and 5 assists while Aiden Porter added 12 points.
Logan Blouir scored 18 points and Damon Cremeans 15 to lead the Blue Devils (9-9, 4-7).
The game was tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter as Porters scored 6 points and Thomas 5 for Fairland while Isaac Clary got all 8 of his points and Blouir scored 5 for Gallipolis.
Polcyn scored 7 points, Porter had 4 points and Thomas hit a 3-pointer as Fairland took a 31-26 lead at the half.
Reece Thomas — who had 5 points — and Cooper Davis each hit 3-pointers for the Blue Devils.
Blouir hit a 3-pointer and scored 8 points while Polcyn had 6 points and each team got 11 points in the quarter and the spread remained the same at 42-37.
But the Dragons went stone-cold in the fourth quarter as they hit only 2-of-9 field goal attempts and scored just 5 points. Polcyn had a 3-pointer and Thomas a basket.
Gallipolis racked up 18 points with Cremeans scored 13 including 5-of-5 at the foul line.
Blouir hit a trey and scored 5 more points to aid the upset win.
