LUCASVILLE — It was a typical tournament game. Slower pace, lower point totals, tough defense.
And the South Point Lady Pointers used tough defense and good shot selection to roll past the Huntington Ross Lady Huntsmen 43-26 in the Division 3 sectional tournament Thursday at Valley High School.
Emilee Carey scored a game-high 18 points and Emilee Whitt had 13 points to lead the Lady Pointers (15-8).
Whitt also had 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Maddy Khounlavong had 3 assists and 4 steals.
South Point was 18-of-39 from the field for 46 percent including 5-of-18 from the 3-point line for 28 percent.
Allison Basye scored 14 points for the Lady Huntsmen (8-15).
South Point led just 9-6 after the first quarter as Carey hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points. Basye had all of Huntington’s points.
The defense held the Lady Huntsmen to only one basket by Megan Steele while Carey hit another 3-pointer and had 5 points with Whitt hitting her own triple and the lead was 18-8 at the half.
Diamond Crawley came to the forefront in the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers and Carey had two baskets as South Point extended its lead to 29-14.
Whitt took over in the fourth quarter with 8 points, Carey scored 4 and Maddy Khounlavong had a basket as the Lady Pointers outscored Huntington 14-12.
Basye scored 6 points and the Lady Huntsmen were 5-of-6 at the foul line in the quarter.
NEXT UP: South Point plays Nelsonville-York at 6:15 Saturday in the sectional finals.
