JACKSON — Tick, tick, tick….KABOOM!
For two quarters, the South Point Pointers were just on the verge of an offensive breakout. But in the third quarter it all exploded as the Pointers scored 28 points to trigger a 64-44 win over the Southeastern Panthers in the Division 3 sectional tournament on Tuesday.
Led by Brody Blackwell and Nakyan Turner who combined for 22 points in the quarter, the Pointers broke open a close game and they coasted to the win.
Southeastern (3-20) took an 11-8 first quarter lead as Aaron Gillum and Cameron Hall scored 4 points each and Aiden Estep hit a 3-pointer.
Chance Gunther and Blackwell had 3-pointers and Turner a basket to account for the Pointers’ offense.
South Point rallied to take a 20-17 halftime lead as Blackwell had a basket and two foul shots and both Mason Kazee and Turner scored 3 points. Jalen Murta scored 4 points for the Panthers.
Then came the third quarter and Blackwell and Turner each rattled the basket for a pair of 3-pointers and two more baskets to give them 10 points each. Blackwell then added a pair of foul shots and the lead was 48-28.
Murta scored 8 of the Panthers 11 points in the quarter.
Six different players scored in the fourth quarter as coach Travis Wise emptied his bench. Carmelo Sammons and Kazee scored 4 points each.
Gillum scored 6 points for Southeastern.
