Minford uses FTs to beat Hornets

WAVERLY — The Coal Grove Hornets were locked up in a tight game with the Minford Falcons when a foul shooting contest broke out.
The problem for the Hornets was it seemed Minford was the only team competing for the Hoop Shoot contest title.
Minford made 29-of-34 free throw attempts for the game including 22-of-28 in the fourth quarter that allowed the Falcons to rally for a 69-63 win over the Coal Grove Hornets in the Division 3 sectional tournament on Wednesday.
Minford outscored Coal Grove 32-27 in the fourth quarter. The Hornets were just 4-of-6 from the line in the quarter.
Elijah Volglesong-Lewis scored 33 points including four 3-pointrers and 11-of-15 at the foul line. He was 8-of-12 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Trenton Zimmerman scored 12 points for Minford with 10 points coming in the fourth quarter as he made 6-of-6 at the line. Nathan McCormick hit 4-of-6 while both Drew Skaggs and Matthew Risner were 2-for-2 in the final quarter.
Cory Borders made four trifectas and scored 20 points, Evan Gannon had 13 points and Tait Matney added 10 points for the Hornets who were 9-of-14 from the line for the game.
Gannon hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points as Coal Grove took a 14-11 first quarter lead. Voglesong-Lewis hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points.
The Hornets were up 29-23 at the half as Borders drained a pair of 3-pointers, Matney hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and Gannon added another 3-pointer.

With Voglesong-Lewis scoring 9 more points in the third quarter, Minford rallied to tie the game at 36.
With Minford spending the fourth quarter at the foul line, the Hornets were staying in the game as Borders knocked down two triples and scored 10 points, Gannon had a 3-pointer and scored 5 points and Malachi Wheeler had 5 points before fouling out.
