JACKSON — When you don’t play well, you just try to survive.
The Fairland Dragons won the game on Survival Island on Friday as they shoot off a cold shooting night to beat the Westfall Mustangs 46-29 to win the Division 3 sectional tournament.
Jacob Polcyn scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Dragons.
Aiden Porter scored 17 as he made 3-of-6 from behind the arc. Gavin Hunt added 8 points and 7 boards.
Jay Wyman made four 3-pointers and had 12 points for Westfall.
Fairland — ranked No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll — shot 21-of-52 from the field and 4-of-14 from the arc.
Porter hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points while Gavin Hunt had 4 points and the Dragons led 11-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Tyler Shipley hit a 3-pointer and Casey Cline a basket in the first quarter for Westfall (11-13).
The Dragons struggled to score 8 points in the second quarter — Porter had 4 — while Jay Wyman and Connor Spohn had 3-pointers to get the Mustangs within 19-15 at the half.
Polcyn hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points and Porter added another triple to help Fairland take a 29-24 lead.
Wyman accounted for all of Westfall’s scoring in the third quarter with three 3-pointers.
Fairland (21-2) finally got its offense going in the fourth quarter as Polcyn scored 8 points and Porter had 5 points including his third 3-pointer.
UP NEXT: Fairland plays South Point at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at Ohio University in the district semifinals.
