Jeeps nip Vikings in D4 sectionals

McDERMOTT — Even John Wayne died in his final movie “The Shootist.”
The Symmes Valley Vikings wearing the good guy white uniforms were hoping to extend a Cinderella-like seasons.
But the South Webster Jeeps foiled the plan as they edged the Vikings 56-54 in the Division 4 sectional championship on Wednesday at Northwest High School.
Jack Leith had 18 points and Logan Walsh 17 as they Vikings finished the season 14-9.
Devyn Coriell scored 19 points to lead three South Webster players in double figures. Gave Ruth scored 14 and Trae Zimmerman got 13.
The Vikings had a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter and the teams continued to trade baskets.
Walsh hit a 3-pointer to put the Vikings up 47-44 but the Jeeps tied the game on a trey by Zimmerman.
A steal and layup by Coriell gave the Jeeps a 51-47 lead. Leith answered with a basket and it was 51-49 with 48 seconds to play.
Ruth hit two foul shots with 36 seconds left as South Webster took a 53-49 lead.
A steal by Zimmerman led to a pair of foul shots by Coriell and the Jeeps were up 55-49.
Caden Brammer’s putback with 11 seconds to play got the Vikings within 55-51.
Zimmerman hit one of two free throws with two seconds left that clinched the win by making it 56-51.
Brammer hit a 3-pointer from the corner at the buzzer that set the final score.
South Webster (12-12) converted 7-of-9 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Symmes Valley fell behind 4-0 to start the game but rallied to take a 13-10 first quarter lead as Walsh hit a pair of 3-pointers and Leith scored 5 points.
The Vikings led by as much as 23-17 with 3:20 to play in the half, but the Jeeps went on a 10-2 run to rest of the half to take a 27-25 lead.
Coriell had a 3-point play and made two 3-pointers as he scored 9 points in the quarter for the Jeeps.
Jack Leith scored 7 points and Luke Leith 4 more in the third quarter as the Vikings came back to take a 39-38 lead.
Coriell and Zimmerman scored 4 points each in the quarter for the Jeeps.
